Fruited Lemonade That Makes You Reconsider It All
ingredience:
lemons/limes (this needs to make up the bulk of the fruit being used, like at least 80%)
whatever other fruits or fruit scraps you want, plus any herbs/other flavorings you want to try. by fruit scraps I mean things like cherry pits, apple peels, pineapple cores, strawberry ends, things like that.
granulated white sugar, the coarser the better, 50% by weight of total citrus rinds + 100% by weight of any additional fruit. you’ll measure this after you prep the fruit.
water as needed
equipment:
a few nonmetallic mixing bowls
a mesh strainer
a chinoise, ricer or some cheesecloth
a kitchen scale
a citrus juicer or reamer (manual or electric)
a potato masher
juice the citrus through a strainer - saving all rinds - and refrigerate the juice for the time being. dice the rinds and other fruits if any, keeping the rinds separate. make note of weights, and measure your sugar.
Place sugar in a large nonmetallic bowl. If using non-citrus fruits and/or any other flavorings, mix them in with the sugar and mash with potato masher. add diced citrus rinds, mix thoroughly, and mash again. cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 4 hours. this allows the sugar to draw out flavors that would otherwise get discarded with the rinds, and the rinds’ acids should be enough to dissolve the sugar into a syrup.
Afterward, mash one last time, then collect the syrup by pressing the macerated mixture through a strainer/chinoise or ricer, or squeeze it through cheesecloth. if you want, this can be saved as a standalone syrup at this point, for use in cocktails or desserts. if not, slowly pour the reserved juice through the solids to to help get the remaining syrup out, and squeeze/press again. do the same thing one more time with warm water (roughly the same amount of water as juice). discard solids (or try making sangria with them!).
taste the mixture and add more water if necessary. a stronger mix is totally fine if you anticipate serving over ice on a hot day, or adding booze, or if there was a lot of non-sour fruit. keep in mind that it will taste a bit less sweet once it’s chilled. pour into a pitcher and refrigerate.
citrus oils will float to the top, so stir/shake before serving. love you. enjoy.

lemon & strawberries (that’s pussy babe!)
lemon & orange with a hint of vanilla (creamsiclemonade…?)
lemon & apples or apple peels with cinnamon/ginger/allspice (for late summer)
some cocktail type combos, booze optional:
lemon or lime & berries with basil + gin
lime & mint + white rum
lime & ginger + dark rum
lime & cucumber + gin
lime & orange (berries optional) + tequila
lemon, orange & cherry + brandy, bourbon, or rye whiskey

Snippet from Down to the Flood chapter 2.
Steve picked up the sketchbook and the box of pencils and went to sit cross-legged on the massive bed, busying himself by testing the hardness of each pencil on the first page, then little caricatures of the feral cats he remembered from District 2. There had been dozens of them that had hung around the tenements and the factories, having their kittens in the bombed out ruins that still hadn’t been cleared away and keeping the district’s rodent population down. Even some of the Peacekeepers had been fond of them, though others had tried to catch and drown them whenever they could.
He put sketchbook and pencil aside halfway through a drawing of the big three-legged tom with the torn ear that had lived in the Peacekeeper barracks – not for any love of the Peacekeepers, as far as Steve and Bucky had been able to determine, but because that was the best place for it to torment the jabberjays the Peacekeepers had been attempting to collect. Half the jabberjays in Two had sounded like yowling cats most of the time.
He wondered if sixty-four years later the Capitol had finally succeeded in rounding up all the jabberjays they had lost during the war, or if they were still out there.
Or if the Peacekeepers had succeeded in killing all the cats in Two.

The reason American Southerners have the luxury of saying that 90 ain’t that bad and it’s not unbearable until it’s 100 is 1) prolonged exposure to high temperatures over multiple decades 2) our mindset for these living conditions.
You don’t have number 1, and you can’t just acquire it, so I need you to adopt number 2 immediately. How do you live like a Southerner in the heat?

Stay inside. Buy a box fan, put it next to a bucket of ice, and wrap your arms around it like a lover. Do not leave the shade under any circumstances. If a dude makes fun of you for getting out of the sun, don’t get mad, just think of a funnier insult to call him while you flip him off and go stand under a tree.
Southerners love nothing more than to exaggerate and lie to each other. Like I think we got off on the wrong foot when you walked in on us saying things like “It was only 110, I didn’t even take my damn jacket off” when really, last week it was 95 at 10 PM and we were on the bed buck nekkid in front of the fan moaning incoherently and praying to die. So yeah, we can take extreme heat. We also want you to think we can take ludicrous heat. You must learn to talk shit and then be a hypocrite and a coward in your actions, because this will serve you best.
It sounds like I am joking but I cannot express to you how much I am not. Do not fuck with Mother Nature, because that bitch will kill you. Take every opportunity to lower your body temperature and drink water, because that is what all of us in hot climates are doing all the time, and that is why we are not dead, even when it seems like we should be.
(And yeah, we do go through like two and a half ugly weeks in April every year where everyone wants to absolutely just goddamn drop dead because none of us have our heat tolerance back, but we must go to work anyway, which must be a crime. And yes, when it gets below 70 we really all do short circuit and cover ourselves in seven jackets, except for Shorts Guy.)

On the one hand, deciding to do a herringbone pattern probably increased the floor renovation project time by 4-5 hours. On the other hand, my library floor is going to look bomb as hell (just as soon as I run to Home Depot for more flooring because I ran out 😬). We’ll do black grout in here as well. And once the floor is done…I can start building bookshelves 🎉🎉🎉
Finally. Ready for grout and also ready for this project to be over. Not to sound old, but my knees are not what they used to be.

Ok, it’s been a hot minute but we are finally making progress again on the library! We have moved the door a foot so we can have wall to wall shelves, and the bookcases are all built! I just have to sand and seal them and hopefully we can install them this weekend.
(!!!!!!!!!) We are sanded and installed! Finishing up the toe kicks tomorrow and then I will seal everything this weekend and hopefully start unpacking books next week!

Light fixture installed, rug laid, throw pillows thrown. Bookcase lighting should arrive this weekend and I’m debating adding gold stars to the ceiling. But we’re nearly done!

I really am in love. I still need to make the rolling ladder and figure out what to do with the TV wall (the wall the couch is facing). But I have to focus on more pressing projects for a bit, so expect a final update in a few months, maybe! ❤️

Alright, let’s do it. The gas is for show. The long winding tube is also for show. It’s just a vortex cannon with extra steps.
The back chamber has gas in it that ignites when the flame travels down the tube, causing a sudden jump in pressure in front chamber.
The layout of the front chamber is important to generating the vortex. The hole is in a near flat surface, and the hole is smaller than that flat surface with walls that are near 90 degrees to the edges of the hole.
When you apply a sudden jump in pressure to a chamber with this kind of layout you generate a stable ‘donut’ of air (vortex) that travels quickly away from the hole and maintains it’s shape and energy for a long distance. You can even focus it more if you put a funnel onto the exit hole.
You can make one from a paper cup:
In this example, pulling back and releasing the stretchy cover gives the sudden jump in pressure to the chamber which generates the vortex.
If, however, you set it up correctly and use an explosive gas to generate an extreme jump in pressure, you can make a vortex that travels extremely quickly and with a surprising amount of power for just air.
Most notably, even when using extreme methods, the vortex is invisible (except in those gifs where it displace the water from the air for a sec). This allows you to make a cannon that let’s you fuck with people over surprisingly long distances. The feeling of a vortex hitting you ranges from someone blowing directly in your face for small ones, to a large bus or truck speeding right by you almost knocking you over.
Make one. They’re great fun.
Most importantly though, this is not a plasma gun. It’s just air.
i think i tend to forget how good boredom is for creativity because we’re all so addicted to numbing ourselves with screens and stimulation. but standing in the shower or going for a walk with no music or just sitting in your bedroom without being allowed to touch any screens & all of a sudden i have multiple new projects to start, a solution to a months-long plot problem & 4 new original characters
