morgynleri: The sixth sense: Wonder (sixth sense wonder)
It is delightfully chilly out today (I need a sweatshirt! And a fuzzy blanket over my feet! And a coat to go outside!) and while rainy, it’s the kind of rainy that is not dampening my spirits, but making me rather happy.

Yeah, I know, the highs are supposed to go back up tomorrow, but. Yesterday was awesomely cool, today is downright chillly, and this makes for a fantastic couple days. I like it when the weather is in the range of chilly-but-not-icy, so long as I have somewhere to warm up, and enough warm clothes for going out in it. 60s and 70s are ideal, because then it’s not too cold and not too warm and I can leave the windows open so long as it’s not raining sideways (yay, overhang!) and delight in the weather.

morgynleri: gollum with the ring, text is: for best results, avoid doing anything stupid (best results)
Today's research fun was the architecture of English cathedrals in the 15th century. Or just, you know, anything pre-Reformation. Which resulted in eight tabs, and about a dozen different wikipedia articles to start from (because I just need to know where things are, I don't need to cite exact sources and show my work in this case). I might poke at it more later, but I have what I needed for the scene, even if it was frustrating to find the information I needed.

So, have gotten the funeral procession in the AU of an AU to St. Paul's (Old St. Paul's, not the current building), and next I get them to Westminster, and bury Robert next to his infant brother in the cathedral there.

I have it in my head that in the original AU, Henry, Blanche, and their two sons who died young - Thomas (less than a year) and James (five) - are buried in a chapel together. The other six are buried in various other places - Robert with Catherine in Westminster, Margaret with Owen and her second husband (currently undecided as to location, needs research), Edward with his wife in Lancaster, Joan with her husband wherever her husband is and whoever I chose for her, Richard with his wife somewhere to be determined, and Elizabeth in the convent she was abbess of.

So of course in the AU of the AU, Robert joins Thomas in that chapel in which Henry and Blanche will later be buried. And, if I keep the later siblings and their living and dying, also James in 1422.

I'm also contemplating not having Henry die in 1422 in this particular variation of the AU, in part because Margaret's already going to have trouble from some people because of her gender, and being only 14 in 1422 would make it even harder for her. Although a 14 year old Queen Margaret would be interesting. Because she would take no shit. However, a queen in the middle of puberty... no, I'm really not sure I want to go there.

Anyway. Onward to burying Robert and the aftermath in which Henry makes Margaret Prince of Wales (Princess of Wales, I suppose, but I'm very tempted for the conversation to result in Margaret, despite being female, being still named Prince of Wales, because she is unequivocally her father's heir, and her new title reflects that). And Bedford hopes that his niece survives this, Thomas Beaufort (Exeter) does his best to make sure she will be as good a warrior as any man who might face her on a battlefield, and Margaret throws herself into the challenge of being the heir to a country that isn't sure a woman is capable of ruling with all the enthusiasm and determination she has.

Meme Thing

Got a list from [personal profile] nenya_kanadka.

You know that meme that goes around sometimes where you post your five favourite kinks and then five favourite couples, and it's like a wish into the universe to see if anybody will write it for you? Let's make it a little more interactive.

Comment here if you want to play, and I will give you 3-6 couples or characters that I associate with you, and you make an entry in your journal talking about those couples/characters and fics that you wish the universe would write for you.

Sam Carter

Sam in charge of SG-1. Sam in charge of Atlantis.

Sam having a chance at a romantic relationship that doesn't end in disaster. Or maybe just not pining for a romantic relationship, and being happy without one.

Sam kicking ass, taking names, and being given the recognition she deserves, instead of being shoved to the side in favor of Yet Another White Man.

Sam working with Teal'c more.

Just. Sam being her badass self without people screaming about her being a Mary Sue and horrible for being a competant and intelligent woman. (Which has stuck with me, and still makes me cranky, whether or not that sort of sentiment has died down.)

Julian Bashir

I'd love to see more exploration of Cardassian culture with Garak/Bashir fic, and how to navigate a relationship when both participants are abuse victims whose lies flow like water, who make themselves into their own masks on a regular basis, and whose lies are as important to who they are as anything else.

And I'd love to see how Julian's parents making the decision to remake him has effected his life, and how badly that hurt him, and what it does to his ability to trust anyone, including himself. How it effects his relationships with others.

Padmé Amidala

Lives. Padmé Lives.

Padmé who is in a romantic and/or sexual relationship with someone other than Anakin Skywalker (and not just in addition to). More femslash Padmé.

Hell, I'd love to see some gen-fic Padmé-centric stuff. Where relationships really aren't on her agenda, even if there are people (one or more) who are in love with her.

Padmé as mother to Leia and Luke. Padmé the Rebel. Just.

The Master

More Jacobi!Master!

I'm very fond of the idea of Jacobi!Master, though we got, like, five minutes of him in canon, if that. It ends up on the same platform as "give me more Dooku-as-played-by-Christopher-Lee, and less Dooku-as-directed-by-George-Lucas fic, damnit", except it's "give me more Jacobi!Master, and please, for love of all that's holy, do not give me more Simm!Master".

*sighs* On the other hand, I haven't been a lot into Doctor Who in years, so there may actually be more of what I want out there that I just haven't gone looking for because I have other fandoms to play in.

anything Harry Potter related

Harry gets therapy.

What fucking epilogue, please, please, let's pretend that doesn't exist.

Magical America - North and South - that utterly ignores Rowling's racism and poor research.

Hell, more of Magical Africa and Magical Asia and Magical Australia, and how they work, and whether or not the Statute of Secrecy even applies there, and what people who actually live there think about how things would work in different places and with different peoples.

More expansions on minor characters. (Millicent Bulstrode is my favorite, and half of that is because I can do just about anything with her character, and it could readily fit into book-canon or movie-canon.)

AUs which ignore Rowling's expanded universe, and do worldbuilding in a completely different direction.

Will still show up eventually, I just switched things so that they post as private posts until I can go in and clean things up. And a couple older posts got deleted because I did not have spoons to deal with changing them to link to the tumblr post where the fic was that I wanted to promote (and was not fic I wrote). I didn't become aware this meant I also deleted some comments made until afterward, because my email did not pling at me like it was supposed to.

I still have the email, though, and will pass on the comments to the author!

“For example, we often hear that necromancy was outlawed because it was a devilish practice that depended upon the power of Satan for its effectiveness. What you do not hear is that necromnacy was an aspect of ancestor worship, and that part of outlawing it involved making it illegal to bury your family members on your own land. Suddenly, you were required to bury your dead in Church-sanctioned graveyards. This effectively removed one of your most solid claims to ownership of your ancestral land. It was no longer the place where you could prove your forefathers lay buried. It made it easier for authorities to come along and kick you out of your home and take state ownership of the land your family had left to you. This also supported the ultimate goal of breaking up family clans, and the political power and wealth that often went along with them.”

Anonymous asked:

Is Chorus and Solo still in progress? I enjoyed it greatly and would like to see more, please.

I answered:

It is still in progress. :)

Like every other AU I have, it goes through cycles of writing and not writing, and it is currently not at the top of the pile of things to write. There will be more of it when it comes back around.

And there’s also the fact I go through cycles of writing lots and writing only a little, and it’s currently at a low ebb - writing will probably pick up again more in late August/early September, with more new stuff to snippet for daily stuff, and that high will last through late November, with December-late February/early March being another slow time, and mid-March to mid-May being another high point.

A piece that may or may not be included in the main story, but does contain spoilers for concepts I plan to use at some point in either Four For Fire, or a story that follows up on that arc. Or both.

Visions of Family

AU: Children of FireWord Count: 1140Characters: Sam Carter, Jolinar of Malkshur, Pele

She is memories and dreams, trapped in a the back of a mind that doesn’t know how to listen for her, and cannot help but talk to her. Her shouts might be the barest whispers of instinct, almost never noticed, but sometimes when she listens to the ramble of Sam’s unconscious mind, she thinks perhaps it sometimes is.

Jolinar has no body, no neurons and synapses of her own, only those borrowed unwitting and unwilling - on both their parts - from Sam, and no more strength than a ghost. It gives her both a strange freedom and traps her in a cage she has no means of breaking.

When Sam’s dreams murmur of a David Rossi, of a plea to save his brother, to save Baal, Jolinar wishes she had enough strength to be more than an unconscious whisper, and to rattle her unintended cage. To shake Sam and add her own plea to that of her brother. She has such a small family, and she cannot bear the thought of even the spoiled baby being lost for his capture by those she had once been part of.

She had always been careful to keep him out of their sights, even if she couldn’t keep them from noticing his existance and the empire he would build.

All she can do is scream until she exhausts what strength she has, and shake the dreaming-self and plead her own dream-self horse for her brother’s life. Her mother’s youngest, the baby she had done so much to protect, because she couldn’t protect her other brother, and could only keep her mother secret.

It’s a surprise, then, when she sees the flash of crimson in the dreams that tell her of the world, to see the glowing gold of the queen who she had never thought to see again. To see the loose robes of her youngest brother, the great thrones of carven wood, the riot of jungle and the rich feast of welcome. To know her former host, her last host, has perhaps heard her screams and done what could be done to save Baal. Taken her home to her mother, though she cannot sit at Pele’s feet and lean her head against her knee as she wishes she could.

Cannot chose to leave her host to swim in the rivers of the great mountain, to give Sam release from her entirely, when she is so trapped that all mourn her death-final. It had been good for Sam, before, but now it makes this collection of synapses all the more a cage from which she cannot break free, and cannot bring herself to will into destruction.

“The ashrak killed her. I was there.”

“There is no trace of her body, perhaps, but that does not mean she is dead in finality.”

“I won’t let you destroy my mind just to find some memories of Jolinar.”

“It will not destroy your mind, and it is not memories I seek. Only my daughter.”

It is as if she walks into a garden both familiar and not, the crimson flowers that her mother loves perfuming the air around her. There are others who rest in the garden, Sam looking confused and awed, and Pele as regal as ever, though worry etches lines around gold-glowing eyes.

She doesn’t pay any attention to Sam, going to sit at her mother’s feet, leaning against her knee as she tries to hide a shudder of relief. A broken lock on an unknowing prison, a chance to escape and be given life renewed in a body that is entirely her own. A new host can be found, will be found, there are never a shortage on her mother’s world.

“How is it possible?” Sam is watching her, gaze incredulous. “How does this even work?”

“Like the harakesh, only somewhat less painful. My brother isn’t the only one who meddles with technology.” Jolinar turns her head to look at Sam now, a wry smile crossing her dream-face. “Both of them have their interests. I had mine, and mother had hers.”

“And your death?”

“Was intended. Life was… unexpected, and very annoying. You couldn’t even hear me when I screamed as loud as I could.” Jolinar shivers, and leans into the hand that comes to rest on the back of her neck. She will have to learn to dream herself in her true form again, not in the body of Sam, but for now, it is all she can summon up.

“You can be removed from my mind with this?”

“Yes and no.” Pele’s voice is rich with familiar reverberation, even here. “I can… copy Jolinar from here, and give her memories and a version of her conscious self to a new offspring. But it will not take her from your mind, unless the synapses that she has been are destroyed. Damage to your brain.”

Jolinar can see Sam wince, and can see her beginning to think it over. She does not like to think of herself split, but it is a risk.

“If that happens, and if I agreed to host Jolinar again, would she be able to reintegrate herself from my brain and herself in her new body, and take the other self from me without the same sort of damage?”

It’s a thought that Jolinar isn’t certain of, but intrigued by. Certainly she could repair a certain amount of brain damage in her host, and she could see overwhelming the weaker echo of herself, though which would truly be the weaker echo, she doesn’t know. But if she could do this, and could leave Sam after, it would allow her to know she has not left herself behind.

Pele’s fingers toy with the strands of her dream-self’s hair, silent for a long moment. “There may be another way to do this. This must be discussed with others.” She draws her hand from Jolinar’s neck. “Will you be content to wait for a chance to leave?”

It is a question addressed to Jolinar, and she shifts so she can stand, can pace and think, though the motion is no more physical than any other dream. If she can wait, trapped in neurons and synapses not her own, for a while, there may be a way out without leaving herself behind. But it means remaining in a cage without anyone to hear her for an unknown length of time, and that terrifies her almost beyond reason.

“Can you make it easier to be heard, while I wait?” She hates the momentary wobble in her voice, dislikes the idea of being utterly dependent on others to give her a window to sanity, but she has to. She cannot be trapped here alone again, even if it means having to find a way to destroy a second-self later.

[ profile] howtofightloneliness:

I see so many fics about Garak and Bashir that are sweet or sexy, and they’re tons of fun, but what I don’t see enough of is the most compelling aspect of their relationship: the fact that Garak is a deeply damaged individual. He is much older than Julian, a different species, and from a totally different background. Where Bashir’s parents risked everything to enhance him and give him a fighting chance in the world, Garak’s father denied their relationship and turned Garak into an efficient wreck. He’s a liar, a murderer, a spy and a torturer, and even his good guy progression can’t change some of that. His charm and good-naturedness is a mask, and if he ever only showed Julian his beaming sarcasm and witty banter in the bedroom (as most fanfics would have us believe), then their relationship was never real. Even the TV episodes show more than that! In The Wire alone, we see Garak scream at and attack Bashir, lie to him repeatedly, and communicate his need for help through strategically placed clues. It’s the closest he can come to revealing himself, because that IS him. It’s all true, “especially the lies,” because that is what Garak consists of. His groanings about sartorial choices and human rituals are characteristic, but they don’t compose his character. I want to see more of the REAL Garak; and, if he can’t give that, more of Bashir’s real frustration at not receiving it.

Oh man, while we’re at it are we really going to keep pretending that Julian is not ALSO damaged as fuck? I’m sorry, but “[his] parents risked everything to enhance him and give him a fighting chance in the world”? No. No. Julian’s parents committed acts of heinous and horrific abuse against him, to the point where they were willing to completely unmake him in hopes of making him a child that deserved their love and affection. Julian’s parents didn’t give him genetic enhancements because he wanted them, because he needed them; he wasn’t born with a heart defect, he wasn’t in pain, he wasn’t suffering. Julian did not need genetic enhancements. Not to survive. Not even to be happy. He just needed them to be the child that his parents wanted.

Julian is a product of abuse in exactly the way Garak is. It manifests in his social awkwardness and his unrelenting desire for approval and his need – not his desire, his need – to always be the very best at everything he does, because if he isn’t, then by his parent’s standards he doesn’t even deserve to exist. Like Garak, Julian lives a life of personas: he is so terrified to live as his authentic self that he almost doesn’t have one. He is whoever you want him to be; a parody of social and intellectual success.

Julian and Garak are not opposites. They are identical. Julian is not some precious, innocent child who’s never suffered, who wouldn’t understand the damage abuse does, who wouldn’t understand Garak’s transient sense of self, who wouldn’t understand Garak’s duplicity and his fear. That’s the face Julian puts on. It’s as real as his super spy identity in “Our Man Bashir”. Julian’s authentic self shows itself when there is no one left to impress, when death is nigh, when only Garak is there to witness it, and it is bitter, and damaged, and deadly. Just like Garak’s is.

Julian’s real self is as damaged and unsure as Garak’s is, and I need a recognition of his complexity as much as I need recognition of Garak’s.

I’d also like to point out that Julian didn’t ever need a “fighting chance in the world”.

Julian Sabatoi Bashir was born in the Federation of Planets, a society free of any monetary system where the needs of every citizen is met.

It was never about Julian. It was about what his parents had envisioned their child would be.

Julian Bashir is an example of something very real that happens to disabled children everyday.

He was taken apart and put back together to fit an arbitrary standard. He had something inherent to himself removed. He was “cured” of what could really only be called a developmental disorder.

The changes to this man were so extreme Julian changed his name. He did not feel he was who he was born as.

It wasn’t about Julian. I wasn’t even about Jules.

It was about his parents’ ideal.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret from personal experience.

That shit leaves deep deep scars.

Deep space scars.

You need to read this fic. You need to drop whatever you’re doing, and you need to read this fic.

“But Jo,” some of you say. “I don’t really want to read a clever, funny, emotional, scientifically-accurate love letter to Jurassic Park with an awesome Incredibly Done With Everything ace Jewish protagonist and her gay friends and perfect velociraptor children overcoming the odds together and Saving The Day with animal behaviorism.”

to which I say: you are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity.

And then I say, okay, but actually, you do. You do want to read this fic. This is literally the best fic I have ever read and it is criminally under-appreciated when in fact it should be the biggest fic in the entire Jurassic Park fandom.

Read this fic okay it will change your life.

Response before mine

I am a cranky person late at night, with loud opinions

Let me give you some help with how to find fics that are tagged with things you’re not looking for, and maybe avoid trying to tell people not to include more than one relationship tag because you don’t like it when people tag more than one relationship in the appropriate field.

There’s this sidebar:

You’ll notice there’s a lot of ways to sort.

You want that field labeled “Search within results”.

Going to use a fandom I’m familiar with and have to regularly filter to find what I want for this example: Hobbit.

If I want gen fic, and no romantic or sexual relationships, this is what goes in that field:

-F/M -F/F -M/M

Most of the time this weeds out a majority of fics with romantic or sexual relationships.

Say I do want something with a particular romantic or sexual relationship, but not others.

Say I look for Fíli/Ori, but there’s a fuck ton of fics with Bilbo/Thorin also being a relationship in fics which have Fíli/Ori (and it doesn’t matter which is primary or background in this case), and I really don’t want to read more of those right now.

Into that field:

-”Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield” -Bilbo/Thorin -”Bilbo Baggins/Thorin” -Thorin/Bilbo -”Thorin/Bilbo Baggins” -”Thorin Oakenshield/Bilbo Baggins”

Voila! Eliminates most of what I don’t want to see. (Granted, I probably don’t have to put all that in, just -Bilbo/Thorin, but I like to be thorough.)

All this without trying to tell an author that they should not tag more than one relationship - the “primary” relationship, as if there must be only one - in a fic.

Which this author, who writes fics with more than one relationship, some of which are important background for the fic, because they inform the current mess, and puts relationship tags in the field designated for them, is currently rather cranky about.

And if that means you don’t want to read what I write because I’m not catering to how you want tags to be, fine. I’m not writing to cater to those who do not want to learn how to police their own experience, and expect others to do so for them.

So long as people tag, then finding what you want is on you, not the author. There are tools to help you narrow the field you have to winnow through. Use them instead of scolding the authors.

And honestly? I’d rather new authors be comfortable tagging their fic in a way that allows them to organize their fic than to be constantly worried that someone is going to jump down their throat for daring to tag a secondary relationship in the relationship field. And if an author is happier tagging secondary relationships in the additional tags field than in the relationship field, than that is their call, and I applaud them for doing what makes them comfortable.

Just don’t tell people they have to tag this way because this is how you want it so your experience is easier, no matter what extra burden it might place on someone else who is doing this for fun and for free.

And now, I’m going to step off this soap box and go to bed.
