1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

I think I actually started with original fiction in middle school. That is, in retrospect, truly atrocious, but was at least a beginning. Or maybe it began with the daily writing exercises in sixth grade, but anyway. Writing was - and in many ways still is - an escape.

The first fandom I got into was Doctor Who, classic reruns when I was five. The first fandom that got me into more than just watching/reading the canon was Shakespeare, particularly Henry V. That, though, was performance, not writing (at the time).

The first fandom I wrote for was X-Men. When the first movie came out. I still have that stuff, in a notebook. And I still love a couple of the characters I created, even if I think the stories themselves are... not worth sharing any longer. That fandom also involved me blatantly inserting myself into a story - something I try very, very hard not to do now.

What drew me in, and what draws me into new fandoms, are the characters. Ones that are strong, complex characters in particular, and generally it's one character that pulls me into the fandom and then I notice the others. Logan/Wolverine for X-Men, the Doctor for Doctor Who, Henry V for Shakespeare. Various others for various other fandoms.
