While the template is officially a subject unknown, Suu and Twelve are Qui-Gon Jinn clones, with Dooku being the front-runner for who commissioned them.

SU-12 didn’t even know who he and his sister - SU-04 - were cloned from, only that they were the only viable results from their maker’s private project. A small batch of twenty, and only two of them, one imperfect, who’d lived to be decanted. Though which of them is the flawed clone when their genetics match, they don’t know. They don’t know who their template comes from, though whoever sent it likely does.

SU-04 doesn’t want to be sent to the person who provided the template, and SU-12 will follow her. She knows things sometimes, and if he can’t trust his sister, who can he trust?

“We have to get to Tipoca City without being put in a stasis pod for shipment.” SU-04 crouches in the dark corner of their bunk. “They were supposed to put us in stasis as soon as we were decanted, but there weren’t any available. The war is making things scarce.”

The war that their creator was helping to supply an army for is the way for them to get out, though SU-12 isn’t sure why they have to. Only that SU-04 says so, and that is enough. He hopes.

It’s another week before they find a way to sneak out, hiding among the crates and pallets of things going from their creator’s home to Tipoca City, with SU-04 whispering under her breath that there’s nothing here to see. SU-12 doesn’t know how no one hears her, but no one does, even in the busy hub in the city.

“Now where do we go?” SU-12 watches the crowd of clones in red uniforms below them from the hiding place his sister had found, hoping none of them will hear his whisper to her and find them. They can’t go back now, only forward.

“Outside. There are ships out there, and we just need to hide in one.” SU-04 is whispering as well, but she doesn’t seem worried that anyone will hear her. “Wait until night, when there’s not as many people.”

There isn’t anything more to talk about then, just them hiding in shadows and waiting, then dropping down to creep out to the doors that lead into the rain that’s so much a part of the planet. SU-12 keeps at his sister’s back, letting her lead him to where they need to go, and watching out for anyone who might stop them and send them back.

The place SU-04 finds them to hide in one of the ships is tiny, but it’s all theirs, and they can get to places to find food easily through the tunnels built into the ship. Access corridors or ventilation shafts, it doesn’t much matter which, only that they’re small and go everywhere, and there’s a junction that has enough room for them and a couple blankets and a handful of ration bars carefully stolen from several crates.

A vibration in the floor wakes SU-12 two days later, and he looks over at his sister, who is smiling, and reaches out to take her hand. They’re leaving, and they’ve not been found.

Getting off the ship proves harder than getting onto it. It never seems to land on another planet, and sometimes they have to move into the tunnels and hold onto their stolen blankets and food while they brace against the sides, and the ship shakes around them. Once, SU-04 wakes him in the middle of their sleep cycle, and drags him from the tunnels into one of the smallest storerooms, hiding in a corner behind things when the shaking starts again.

This time there are wailing sirens, and shouts far closer than any ever have been, but when SU-12 wants to go back into the tunnels, SU-04 shakes her head violently, and clings to him until he settles back down beside her.

“There will be no air in our nest.” SU-04 laces her fingers through his, and holds on tight. “There will be air here, and we can find a new nest when they’re done.”

It’s the worst time, but it’s not long after that when there’s a chance to get off the ship again. Creeping out while it’s landed on a planet that’s loud and bright and full of people and buildings and it’s easy to disappear into the crowd without being seen.

They become Twelve and Suu, and they find another ship, a smaller one with a captain who Suu trusts to help them. They have work to do, and learn, and in return they’re fed and have beds like they did before they left the planet they were decanted on. It’s not easy, but Twelve likes it.
