Prompt: Find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground
Word Count: 170
Jack stood at the edge of the graveyard, watching a distant figure as it bent to lay what it carried on the ground. He could see it as clearly as if he stood beside the man in his suit. A simple marker with a name and dates that didn't tell the whole story. A grave that held nothing but the ashes of a life that could have been, and a love that refused to let go of the dead.
This was the day every year he could almost curse the Doctor and the wreckage he left in his wake. The cost of his adventures, buried in the welcoming earth. Almost, but not quite. Because he felt the deaths as dearly as Jack.
"The offer's still there." He hadn't noticed his companion, his charge, return from his mission.
"The answer's still the same." He tilted his head towards the waiting car. "I'll give you a lift back to the TARDIS, Doctor."
No, he couldn't curse him. Even today, of all days.
