24th century

She hadn't told them her plans. Hadn't told her family about the arrangement with the man she'd met while out on assignment, the man who didn't belong. She didn't know where she was going, but she couldn't stay here, running Torchwood, watching time slip through the fingers of everyone she loved, watch them age and die.

She stopped at a small collection of mossy gravestones, laying a handful of roses in front of them as she read the names one last time. Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, Rickey Smith, Jake Simmons.

"Sleep well," she murmured, before hitching the small pack she'd brought with her higher on her shoulder, turning away. Giving the man waiting at the edge of the cemetary a half-grin, she walked to him, accepting his hand as he reached for his wrist computer, activating a teleport to his ship.

"So, you never did tell me how you recognized me." The man settled into the captain's chair, watching her with an easy smile, and curiosity in his blue eyes. "Or why you called me Jack."

"I knew someone like you once. A long time ago." Rose shrugged, setting her pack onto the narrow bunk set into the wall. "Jack was a... friend."

The man raised an eyebrow, his grin widening a fraction. "Just a friend."

Rose shrugged. "Yeah. 'S past, though. No looking back."

"And no regrets." He spun the chair slightly, hands hovering over the controls a moment. "Any time or place you wanted to go in particular?"

"Where's your favorite place to go for a party?" Rose leaned against the back of his chair, meeting his sideways glance with a smile. "I've been thinking about taking a holiday for years."

"What sort of holiday are you looking for?"

"Fun, carefree, and tropical. Anywhere but Earth, anywhen but now." She reached out her hand to comb her fingers through his hair, "With a beach, clothing optional. And absolutely no world-ending catastrophes waiting to happen. Or even minor problems that require any attention from me."

He grinned back at her, setting coordinates. "That sounds like my kind of holiday."

"You're welcome to stay for however long you like. I won't mind the company." Rose leaned in closer, barely brushing his lips with her own. He wasn't Jack, or her Doctor, but he was here, and now, and she hadn't let anyone get close enough for this in decades. Even now, perhaps more so in this world, they wanted something more than a few nights, or a few months.

He leaned forward, lips meeting hers, one hand coming up to cradle the back of her head so he could deepen the kiss. They pulled back when they both were gasping for air, and he looked at her a long moment.

"No promises. And I don't do long goodbyes."

"Neither do I."
