Writing Update
Oct. 26th, 2010 06:33 pmEditing and re-writing is always a little more difficult than the first round of writing, where there's nothing there to compare it to from earlier drafts. But it's worth it, and it's better when I have a beta reader who can find where I've had weak points that need shoring up, even if I don't think to change anything at the time.
There's a couple older stories I have where I'm looking at them and wishing I had found a beta-reader the first time through, but time has done a good job of making me more aware of my mistakes. And there's the current one where while I was aware there were mistakes, and even to a certain extent what they were, I couldn't quite figure out what I might be able to do to fix them. Time and a second pair of eyes both do wonders to improve a story, even when at the time, I don't know that I can improve it.
I don't always get a second pair of eyes for shorter stories (under 1k), but I have been trying a little harder, when I know a story is going to be longer, to find a beta-reader. Mostly. There are some... which haven't had that benefit. Most of them, I think, are ones which I've been working on with
auberus, where we are each writing some of the characters involved, and letting things work out as they will. There is plotting, of course, but there's still a strong element of just seeing where the character interaction takes things. And we keep an eye out for each other's mistakes as we go.
I've gotten three paragraphs written this evening, anyway, and right now, that's happy making. Yeah, not as much as yesterday, but after fighting wind today and such... I'm just glad to have enough of a brain to write anything (this post included). And there will be more writing as yet this evening, though perhaps not much of it on the particular story, so that's good enough.
