*screams into a pillow so as not to frighten the cats*

So. I'm going to make this clear here, since I had a reminder elsewhere that some people think they're entitled to tell an artist everything that's "wrong" with a piece, in said artist's own space.

If someone does not EXPLICITLY consent to criticism on a piece of art - whether that is writing, traditional media art, digital art, fiber art, ANY ART - then criticising their work to their face is FUCKING RUDE. And a violation of their boundaries and a blatent failure to obtain consent.

Art existing in the world is NOT consent to criticism. No, not even so-called constructive criticism.

I very explicitly DO NOT consent to criticism on ANYTHING I post to AO3. Or publically here or on my fic com.

If I want critical feedback on works posted to my circle only (or to members only on my fic com), I will ASK for it (there's a tag for it, even!). The only exception to that is for specific people who I have known for years, either online or in brickspace or both. Who hopefully already know who they are, as I have asked them for critical feedback privately.

And that is the explicit laying out of my boundary on feedback. Just so everyone is clear on it.

So apparently a shared subscription for the Washington Post means "you can see TWO articles, and then we'll paywall you again until you get YOUR OWN subscription instead of costing us money by mooching off someone else who offered you the free month of access we gave them to share".

*screams in frustrated rage* ALL I WANTED WAS TO READ ABOUT THE PEOPLE BEING AWESOME, YOU ABSOLUTE SHITBAGS. FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU. WITH A RUSTY FUCKING SPORK!

*stomps off to go try to calm down because I don't actually like being this angry*

Anonymous asked:

what do you think of the universal basic income scheme some countries are trying out?? Would you ever consider doing some variation of that in America???

[tumblr.com profile] whitehouse answered:

I talked about my thoughts on UBI in a recent speech. Short answer: I don’t think it is the answer because too costly to give to everyone without a big and unrealistic increase in taxes and because the attitude behind UBI is giving up on work. Instead, I think we should focus on investing more to make college more affordable among other items.

I added:

You have got to be kidding me.

I mean, yes, the issue about taxes I can see.

But “giving up on work”?

How is making sure that no one has to worry about whether or not they’ll eat, or whether not they’ll have a roof over their head, by ensuring that everyone has enough regular income to cover that “giving up on work”?

How is giving people the freedom to find a job that is suited to their abilities and skills and doesn’t destroy their physical and/or mental health by relieving them of the stress of not being able to meet the basic physical needs of themselves - and their families - “giving up on work”?

How is taking care of children, those who cannot work, and the elderly, “giving up on work”?

How is rejecting the classist, ableist, racist, sexist notion that only those who can produce to an arbitrary standard deserve to live “giving up on work”?
