morgynleri: the word tolkien in black over pale green (tolkien)
From a piece that is going to go with my A Path From the Fire AU, set just after the Fall of Gondolin.

Fingon untangles himself some from Aredhel, and reaches out to grab hold of Turgon as she had over Gondolin. Leading them through halls that bend strangely and make her wonder if it is possible to have a headache without a head to ache.

Yet all that is forgotten when they reach a space that holds familiar faces. Her father, summer sky and midnight stars. Her uncle, all bright flame, gold and red and sun warm. Steely Caranthir and mirror‒polished Curufin. Golden Elenwë already wrapping around Turgon.

And beyond hope, curling around her with murmurs and joy‒lightened grief. Safe. He is safe. Safe. Safe. The chant echoes between them, the fierce and sharp hope that had kept her fighting until blood ran thin and flames burned too deep.

Nothing else matters now. She can rest here, with her beloveds, and she can know her son lives, and all else is the concerns of the living.

Avari have bagpipes they use to make weaponized music when dealing with orcs. Because bagpipes are awesome, and because I can.

(Ok, it's one particular group of Avari, but I'm attempting to build three different groups of Avari, two that tend to be closely related enough they use similar names for themselves, so I kinda need to sort out things for each of them that distinguish them from the others. Khîtikweni created chili peppers and curry, they talk to trees, and they have some of the few remaining Awakened elves among their number, and have a good relationship with the khazâd. Galdelaikweni have two groups, one which has bagpipes, horses, and keep turning orcs into corpses (Galdelaikweni aud Phoroti), the other of which trades with everyone, has reed pipes and bone pipes, uses hounds for carting things around, keeps an oral history back to when elves awakened, and collects stories about everyone else (Galdelaikweni aud Solos). I have characters populating the khîtikweni and the Galdelaikweni aud Solos, but not yet the Galdelaikweni aud Phoroti. Yet. There is going to be someone with a bagpipe showing up sooner or later.)
